Application was made in October 2006 to regulate massage therapists under the Alberta Health Professions Act (HPA). The HPA document was collaboratively compiled and submitted by the ARMTS, the Massage Therapist Association of Alberta and the Remedial Massage Therapist Association.
Some highlights of the 2006 HPA application are:
• Optimal inclusiveness of practicing massage therapists into the regulatory process through a quality management system which qualifies the therapist based on her/his education, years of practice and continuing education. Information on the quality management system is available by clicking on the “ISO-9001:2000” button on this website.
• Recognition of the Alberta Registered Massage Therapists Society Exam (ARMTSE) as the provincial exam of the proposed regulatory body. Massage therapists entering the profession will be required to sit and pass the five components of the ARMTSE. Information on the provincial exam and a Candidate’s Guide are available by clicking on the “Exam” button on this website.
• Professionalism is as professionalism does. The procedures and protocols outlined in the 2006 HPA are already practiced by the three groups who have made the HPA application. The procedures are not merely theoretical or speculative. Regulation according to this application delineates competency in massage therapy and create an environment where massage therapists and their profession are on a course of incremental improvements.
