The Alberta Registered Massage Therapists Society Exam (ARMTSE) is a five-part competency examination. "Knowledge" and "Clinical Judgement" are the written components. Candidates are also required to demonstrate their practical skills in the "Case History," "Orthopaedic Assessment" and "Treatment" components of the exam.
The ARMTSE is psychometrically compiled and assessed by Dr. Claudio Violato of the the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine using an exam structure similar to other health sciences. The ARMTSE has undergone academic peer review, published as “Certification Examinations for Massage Therapists: A Psychometric Analysis,” in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, February 2002, Volume 25, Number 2, pages 111-115.
